note to self:
-
do not be proactive. In fact, if you are proactive, you will be chastised for not being responsible and letting someone know what you are working on
-
do not think that by doing your own scheduling you are being responsible, for someone will let you know you are infringing on their
naptime. -
in fact, if your plan on taking a day for yourself and will not be at work, do not write it on the schedule on two places and let your secretary know, for this will not be sufficient. Instead, just write a quick note and stick it on your boss’s door, preferably three weeks in advance and then every day you are there up until the day you take off so that he is well aware of when you will not be in the office.
-
You will be chastised for not getting enough done during the day, but do not make the mistake of working faster. For then there will be mistakes in your work and you will be chastised for making said mistakes. You will then, ironically, be told to slow down and make sure your work is right.
-
understand your work will never be right.
-
be aware that you will be asked to fix various machines around the office including, but not limited to, testing apparatus, other people’s printers, and the water cooler. You will not be compensated for these actions, so don’t even joke that you should be.
-
you will only be appreciated when you are not there. While you are there, you will be taken for granted and then chastised on a regular basis.
-
accept all of this with good grace and the proper amount of respect for your elders and perhaps, when the good doctors retire in 10 years, they will recommend your services to their colleagues.
-
But in the meantime, make good connections and seriously think about getting licensed.
the end.

Thanks for all the comments about … well … comments. It’s nice to see some of you lurkers pop out every now and then! Some of you, perhaps, don’t have websites of your own? I tried to click on your names and I got NOTHING. NADA. That made me sad.
It’s amazing to me that I have a following at all. So I wanted to take a second and say THANK YOU for reading. Y’all make my angst worth it.

When I worked in corporate america, I hated the word proactive so much I would twitch anytime I heard it.
I still do a little.

Ah… the good doctors.. yes indeed. For well educated people they can certainly be dense and… well… assholes.
Been there, doing that, looking for an escape.

I’m with Raven in that I hate the word “proactive”. I hate all corporate catch phrases/words…some other good ones to hate…”disconnect” and “due dilligence”…ugh.
I’ve had some really doozies for bosses in the past…sounds like you’ve got one currently. Good luck!!

Work is far too overrated. Funny (but true) post

Do we work together? You’re probably the girl in accounting who wears the wonderful pink car coat to work when it’s chilly.

OMG, I would love to own a pink car coat, but sadly no. I have no head for accounting.
And y’all guessed wrong … I’m not in the corporate world at all (anymore). Guess some things are just universal!

If it makes you feel better, I just started my new job. (In Accouting =) ) In my office no one talks. We all just sit in our cubicles and tap away on our keyboards. Every once in a while you will hear someone on the phone. Oh what I would do for someone to come talk to me.
Working sucks!!

That sounds like a fun place to work.
Oddly, not 5 minutes ago, I had the “please get this done today, but sloooow doooown because you’ll fuck it up otherwise” conversation with my boss. So maybe you’re a legal secretary?

Holy Shit! You work for the same man I do! I just didn’t realize that he supervised technicians as well. He total sucks doesn’t he?
(thanks for the note of sympathy…….and thanks for the compliment on the name. I love it too. A very good friend came up with that one.)
